What is the difference between Cursor's Chat and Composer?

Updated October 2026 · How we answer

Short answerChat is for asking questions and getting explanations in a sidebar, while Composer is for generating and editing code across multiple files directly in your project.

Chat: Conversational Assistance

Chat opens in a sidebar and lets you have a back-and-forth conversation about your code. You can ask questions like 'What does this function do?' or 'How can I optimize this query?'.

Chat can see your open files and any code you select, but it doesn't directly modify your codebase. It provides explanations, suggestions, and code snippets you can copy manually.

Use Chat when you need to understand code, debug an issue, or get advice without changing files. It's also useful for learning and exploring ideas.

Composer: Multi-File Code Generation

Composer is a separate interface (opened with Cmd/Ctrl+I) that can create and edit code across multiple files. You describe a feature or change, and Composer generates a diff you can review and apply.

Composer is designed for larger tasks like adding a new component, refactoring a module, or implementing a feature that touches several files. It can also run terminal commands if you allow it.

Unlike Chat, Composer directly modifies your project files after you accept the changes. It's more action-oriented and suited for building rather than just discussing.

When to Use Each

Use Chat for quick questions, code explanations, and debugging help without modifying files. Use Composer when you want to implement changes across your codebase.

Both tools share context from your project, but Composer is more powerful for generation. You can switch between them as needed; for example, use Chat to plan, then Composer to execute.

Some users prefer to start with Chat to clarify requirements, then open Composer to generate the code.

  • Chat: Q&A, explanations, no direct file edits.
  • Composer: multi-file edits, code generation, applies changes.
  • Chat is in the sidebar; Composer opens in a dedicated panel.
  • Composer can run terminal commands; Chat cannot.
  • Use Chat for learning, Composer for building.

Common mistakes

  • Thinking Chat can directly edit your files—it only provides suggestions you must apply manually.
  • Using Composer for simple questions, which can be overkill and slower than Chat.
  • Expecting Composer to work perfectly without reviewing the generated diff before accepting.
