How do I install extensions in Cursor?

Updated October 2026 · How we answer

Short answerYou can install extensions in Cursor through the Extensions view, just like in VS Code. Open it with Ctrl+Shift+X (Cmd+Shift+X on Mac), search for an extension, and click Install.

Using the Extensions View

Cursor is built on VS Code, so it uses the same extension marketplace. To install an extension, open the Extensions view by clicking the Extensions icon in the Activity Bar or pressing Ctrl+Shift+X (Cmd+Shift+X on Mac).

Type the name of the extension in the search bar. When you find the one you want, click the Install button next to it. The extension will download and install automatically.

After installation, some extensions may require a reload of the window. Cursor will usually prompt you to reload if needed.

Alternative Installation Methods

You can also install extensions from a VSIX file if you have one. Go to the Extensions view, click the three-dot menu at the top, and choose 'Install from VSIX...'.

Another way is to use the Command Palette (Ctrl+Shift+P or Cmd+Shift+P) and type 'Extensions: Install Extensions' to open the Extensions view directly.

Some extensions are built into Cursor by default, like the ones for AI features. You can disable or uninstall them if you don't need them.

Managing Installed Extensions

Once installed, you can manage extensions from the same Extensions view. You can disable, uninstall, or update them individually.

Extensions are shared between Cursor and VS Code if you have both installed? Not exactly. Cursor maintains its own set of extensions, but you can import your VS Code settings and extensions during setup.

If you run into issues with an extension, try disabling others to check for conflicts, or check the extension's documentation for compatibility with Cursor.

Common mistakes

  • Thinking Cursor has its own separate marketplace; it uses the same one as VS Code, so most extensions work.
  • Assuming all VS Code extensions are compatible; some may not work due to Cursor's modifications.
  • Forgetting to reload the window after installing an extension that requires it.
