What are the system requirements for Cursor?

Updated October 2026 · How we answer

Short answerCursor runs on Windows 10+, macOS 10.15+, and modern Linux. It needs at least 4GB RAM, but 8GB+ is recommended for smooth AI use.

Operating System

Cursor supports Windows 10 and later (64-bit), macOS 10.15 Catalina and later, and several Linux distributions like Ubuntu 18.04+, Fedora, and Debian.

For Mac, both Intel and Apple Silicon (M1/M2/M3) are supported. On Linux, you may need to install additional libraries depending on your distribution.

Cursor is built on Electron, so it has similar OS requirements to VS Code. Older operating systems may not be officially supported.

Hardware

Minimum: 4GB RAM, 2GB free disk space, and a dual-core processor. However, for a good experience with AI features, 8GB RAM or more is recommended.

The AI features rely on cloud processing, so a dedicated GPU isn't necessary. But a stable internet connection is required for AI completions and chat.

Disk space usage grows with extensions and projects; plan for at least 10GB free for comfortable use.

  • RAM: 4GB minimum, 8GB+ recommended
  • Disk: 2GB for app, plus space for projects
  • Processor: Dual-core minimum, quad-core recommended
  • Internet: Required for AI features

Common mistakes

  • Assuming a high-end GPU is needed—AI runs in the cloud.
  • Trying to run on unsupported older OS versions like Windows 7.
  • Underestimating RAM needs when working with large projects and AI.
